The reveal and the trailers
Ubisoft announced the Remake during Gamescom's Opening Night Live in Cologne on Aug 25, 2026, calling it "a modern reimagining of the critically acclaimed turn-based strategy classic" (Ubisoft press release, Aug 26, 2026). The Reveal Trailer premiered with the announcement, and the same day Ubisoft News posted "Return to Erathia in 2027", which says the game "is coming in 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC" (Ubisoft, Aug 25, 2026). Store pages opened at once for wishlists. The Reveal Trailer is a cinematic, not gameplay: a voice declares "The great king of Erathia is dead", an army answers "FOR ERATHIA!", and it closes on "Heroes will rise. Kingdoms will fall."
Ubisoft followed it on Aug 26, 2026 with a Gameplay Overview Trailer, narrated over the Remake's own footage: "a turn based strategy game blending exploration, tactical combat, building and resource management, and RPG elements", in which heroes explore an adventure map "initially shrouded in a mysterious fog of war" (Gematsu). At Gamescom the Remake was playable at Ubisoft's booth, and the team held developer panels on the show floor (Ubisoft on Steam, Sep 4, 2026).
Creators who played early builds describe the same game. Mortismal Gaming, who played a remote demo "for a couple of hours courtesy of Ubisoft", reports that the expansions "are included and rolled into the base game", that the Remake runs on Snowdrop, and that its map editor is "retrocompatible", converting old community maps for the Remake (Aug 26, 2026). That is his account from the demo, not Ubisoft's.
"Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake is our way of highlighting the rich legacy of the 1999 original and updating that experience for a new generation of players," said Xavier Poix, Senior Vice President at Ubisoft, who leads the studios making it (press release, Aug 26, 2026).
Who makes it
The Remake is "Developed by Ubisoft China studios in Chengdu and Shanghai", with Ubisoft Paris and Ubisoft Montpellier named as associate studios (press release, Aug 26, 2026). Ubisoft publishes it. Ubisoft says the project goes back to a decision in 2022 "to reinvest in the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise", which produced two games: the Remake, which brings back "the classic experience", and the new Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era (Ubisoft on Steam, Aug 27, 2026).
What it keeps
Ubisoft's first developer blog, "Welcome Back to Erathia" (Aug 27, 2026), sets out what stays: "the full original story experience, including The Restoration of Erathia and both expansion packs", all factions "from day one", and the game's "three core pillars: Adventure map exploration, Tactical combat, Town management". The team says it has "preserved the original gameplay framework while working hard to maintain the pacing and balance that veteran players know and love", and that the Random Map Generator and Hot Seat mode "will also return in full". The press release counts "all nine iconic factions", so the nine towns of the Complete edition, from Castle to Conflux, are all in; the gameplay overview speaks of "nine unique faction towns", each with its own buildings, powers and creatures.
Geek Culture Plays' 20 minutes of PC preview gameplay (Aug 26, 2026) shows those pillars at work in the Remake's 3D: an army storms a walled town across a hex grid, its stacks highlighted in green and red, and the hero opens a spell book mid-battle. Ubisoft's brand director for the series, Eric Damian-Vernet, told GRYOnline.pl that the Remake launches with the original game's balance (GRYOnline.pl, Sep 9, 2026).
What changes
Everything is rebuilt in 3D. The Remake "trades the original's fixed 2D isometric perspective for a highly detailed 3D world and free camera control", with "4K visuals, dynamic lighting, real-time weather, and shifting seasons" (press release, Aug 26, 2026); in the gameplay overview, "Creatures react to your presence" and a new Kingdom map gives a strategic view of the whole war. The campaigns are "woven into a single continuous experience" with a new introductory prologue, and the store pages add an epilogue (Steam). It adds fully produced cinematics, voice acting, an online mode for up to eight players with "a simultaneous turn system", "enhanced planning and decision-making tools", an in-game hub for community maps, and a map editor that imports maps made for the original. Every change, one by one, is on What's New in the Remake, and a side-by-side table with the versions sold today is on Heroes 3 vs Remake vs HD Edition.
The art feedback and the roadmap
The new look split players. Comments under the reveal trailer "leaned critical", some joking that it looked AI-generated (GameDaily, Aug 25, 2026), and 80 Level collected commenters calling it "plastic" and like a "F2P mobile game" (80 Level, Aug 26, 2026). PC Gamer's Fraser Brown, who played it before the reveal, found the units "considerably more detailed" and the combat animations strong, "but I fear the soul might be lacking"; the original "simply had a bit more character" (PC Gamer, Aug 26, 2026).
Ubisoft answered twice on Steam. On Sep 4, 2026 the team said it was reading the feedback and did not want "to give placeholder responses or make promises before we have concrete information". On Oct 7, 2026 its "Community Roadmap, Playtest, and Events" said that much of the feedback concerned "the game's visuals, and in particular some of the units' designs", that "this feedback has been heard", and that the team has "already begun refining several creature models" (Ubisoft on Steam). The roadmap lays out four feature cycles of about a month each, alongside a running track of faction and art reveals:
| Cycle | Topic | What Ubisoft listed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Playstyles | Options to adjust "object scale, color and lighting, and UI/UX design" for a classic or modern feel |
| 2 | Game Modes and Quality of Life | Player customization and comfort features |
| 3 | User-Generated Content | "Map editors, modding support, and more" |
| 4 | Multiplayer and Long-Term Operations | "Hotseat, PvP, and beyond" |
Ubisoft adds that "not every request will result in a change to the game".
Horn of the Abyss and the Remake
Horn of the Abyss, the fan-made, unofficial expansion that adds the Cove, Factory and Bulwark towns, is not part of the Remake, and Ubisoft has not announced any of its content. Damian-Vernet told GRYOnline.pl that Ubisoft has contacted its makers, has a good relationship with them and talks with them regularly, but would not confirm an official expansion in its style; he said the Remake starts from the original balance while staying open to options such as HotA's balance (Sep 9, 2026). CD-Action reported that the Remake will support mods through mod.io, on consoles too (CD-Action, Sep 1, 2026). The HotA Crew has made no public statement about the Remake as of Oct 21, 2026.
The Complete Edition on Steam the same day
Alongside the reveal, Ubisoft put the original 1999 game with both expansions on Steam for the first time, as the Complete Edition for $9.99. The first download held only a 23.49 KB placeholder file, and Ubisoft apologized on Aug 27, 2026 for releasing "the wrong package" (VideoCardz, Aug 26, 2026; Ubisoft on Steam). Ubisoft says the Remake "is not intended to replace the original game" and that it will keep supporting the 1999 version (Aug 27, 2026).
Two Heroes games in one year
The Remake shares 2027 with Olden Era, Unfrozen's new Heroes game, which entered early access on Apr 30, 2026 and is expected to reach 1.0 in 2027. PC Gamer calls Olden Era "obviously a spiritual successor to HoMM 3" and finds it odd to see a remake share the limelight with it, but welcomed "two coming along at the same time" after a decade without Heroes games (Aug 26, 2026). How the two compare is on Heroes 3 vs Olden Era, and Olden Era has a viki of its own at oldenera.vi.ki.
Release, price and the playtest
Ubisoft has dated the Remake only to 2027. No store shows a price, pre-order or edition as of Oct 21, 2026, and Ubisoft has not narrowed the window to a quarter (GamesHub, Aug 26, 2026). Everything known about the date is on Remake Release Date. The first chance to play it at home is a Closed Playtest in November 2026, with sign-ups at register.ubisoft.com since Oct 19, 2026.
