Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Ubisoft's "2027" window.
Best guessUbisoft has said only "2027" for the Remake (on every store page and in its Aug 25, 2026 reveal), with a Closed Playtest in November 2026 and four monthly feature cycles on its Oct 7, 2026 roadmap still to run; with no month, quarter or price announced, we count to the end of the announced year. Horn of the Abyss

Horn of the Abyss (HotA) is a free, fan-made and unofficial expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 by the volunteer HotA Crew, first released Dec 31, 2011, that adds the Cove, Factory and Bulwark towns, new creatures, artifacts, campaigns and balance fixes. Version 1.8.1 (Aug 25, 2026) is the latest, and since that day it is also free on Steam and GOG.

Horn of the Abyss (HotA) is a free, fan-made and unofficial expansion for Heroes of Might and Magic 3, made by a volunteer team called the HotA Crew, first released on Dec 31, 2011, that adds three new towns (the Cove, the Factory and the Bulwark), new creatures, heroes, artifacts, campaigns, terrains and map objects, and fixes many of the original game's bugs and balance problems. It is not made or endorsed by Ubisoft. The latest version is 1.8.1, released Aug 25, 2026, the same day HotA arrived as a free listing on Steam and GOG for anyone who owns the original game (h3hota.com). Most people who still play Heroes 3 online play it with HotA and the fan-made HD mod, which is built into HotA's Steam release. The new towns are covered on Horn of the Abyss Towns; the ways to set the game up today are on How to Play Heroes 3 Today.

What Horn of the Abyss is

The HotA Crew calls HotA a "global add-on" to Heroes 3: new towns, creatures, artifacts, objects, terrains, campaigns and maps, plus bug fixes, interface improvements, a reworked random map generator and a much larger map editor (h3hota.com). Its FAQ says HotA continues where New World Computing's own expansions stopped, that new elements are meant to "coexist in harmony with the original game", and that the crew consults online players about balance, which is why it suits tournaments (HotA FAQ). It is fundamentally non-commercial: the crew says it has not earned "a single cent" from it and accepts no donations (HotA FAQ).

HotA's own Steam page sums up the current release: three new factions, 54 new playable characters across the new towns plus campaign figures, five new campaigns, dozens of new artifacts (the eponymous Horn of the Abyss and the Sleepkeeper among them), the new terrains Highlands and Wasteland, a spell research system, external dwellings that keep accumulating their weekly growth, and "the essential HD Mod by Baratorch integrated" for high resolutions and an online lobby (Steam).

The crew keeps in touch with some former New World Computing developers, and some HotA art, characters and story appear in Archon Studio's official Heroes 3 board game (HotA FAQ; CD-Action, Sep 3, 2026). None of that makes HotA official: it is a fan project, and Ubisoft did not make it.

Version history

HotA arrived on New Year's Eve 2011, and big updates on Dec 31 have become a tradition (CD-Action, Sep 3, 2026). Every date below is from the HotA Crew's own changelog and download archive (changelog; h3hota.com); smaller fix releases are left out.

Version Released What it brought

The Bulwark's campaign was not ready for 1.8.0 and is still missing in 1.8.1; the crew says to expect it in a future update (changelog). The HotA Crew never announces release dates in advance (HotA FAQ).

The three new towns

HotA adds three towns to the nine of the official game, all of them neutral and all fan-made: none is in Ubisoft's game or announced for the Remake. Norovo opens his HotA playthrough of the Factory by calling it the second faction HotA added, one in which almost every unit has an ability never seen in the game before. Their creatures, stats and heroes are on the Horn of the Abyss Towns page.

  • Cove (1.0, Dec 31, 2011): a pirate and sea town on swamp, from the pirate kingdom of Regna, built around ships and fast raids. Its level 3 Pirate has two upgrades, the Corsair and the Sea Dog (h3hota.com; Steam).
  • Factory (1.7.0, Dec 31, 2023): a steampunk town on the new Wasteland terrain with eight creature types, because it has two level 7 creatures, the Couatl and the Dreadnought, which can both be built (h3hota.com).
  • Bulwark (1.8.0, Dec 31, 2025): a frozen town of Kobolds, Snow Elves, Yeti and Jotunns from the island of Vori, on snow, whose heroes use the new Runes skill. The crew long called it Kronverk (CD-Action, Dec 31, 2025); its English name is Bulwark, and it is not the original game's Stronghold.

Other additions

Beyond the towns, HotA adds new neutral creatures (the Leprechaun, Satyr, Steel Golem and Fangarm among them), new artifacts and combination items, sea objects and creature banks, reintroduced and rebalanced heroes, and the Highlands and Wasteland terrains (h3hota.com). Ships became more important with the Cove, and the Factory brought airships and Airship Yards to maps (GRYOnline.pl, Jan 3, 2024). For map makers HotA has its own scenario editor, a campaign editor (since 1.7.0) and a random map template editor (since 1.5.0), and, since Sep 2026, Steam Workshop support (CD-Action, Sep 1, 2026).

HotA also changes the original game where its crew saw bugs or balance problems, and its long changelog covers everything from hero and creature rebalances to fixes for out-of-sync online games (changelog). Original maps from The Restoration of Erathia, Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death still load; on them, the new towns are available when Castle, Rampart, Inferno, Dungeon and Stronghold are (h3hota.com).

How to install Horn of the Abyss

HotA is not a stand-alone game: it goes into a folder that already holds Heroes 3 (CD-Action, Sep 3, 2026).

  1. Own Heroes of Might and Magic 3: The Shadow of Death or the Complete edition, in any language. The Complete edition is sold on Steam and GOG for $9.99 (Oct 21, 2026).
  2. On Steam or GOG, add HotA from its free store page and install it. Steam's HotA listing requires the Complete edition (app 4921760) in your library (Steam).
  3. Otherwise, download the 1.8.1 installer from h3hota.com and install it over the game (or over an older HotA). It adds its files without replacing the original ones (HotA FAQ).

Do not install HotA over the 2015 HD Edition, The Restoration of Erathia or Armageddon's Blade: it does not work with them (h3hota.com). The crew has no plans to support the HD Edition and points anyone who wants high resolutions to the HD mod instead (HotA FAQ). Ubisoft's own Steam FAQ for the Complete edition says it supports "the HD Mod and Horn of the Abyss (HotA)" (Steam, Sep 18, 2026). HotA is made for Windows; on macOS, Linux and Android it runs only through emulators, which the crew warns are not always stable (h3hota.com).

The online lobby

HotA's online lobby belongs to the HD mod, not to HotA itself: Alexander Barinov's HD mod added the "HotA online-lobby for multiplayer gaming" in version 5.0 beta 1 on Aug 19, 2017, a friends list and blacklist that November, and a history of ranked games on Oct 25, 2023 (HD mod changelog). The HotA FAQ asks players not to report lobby problems to the HotA Crew, because the lobby server is the HD mod developer's (HotA FAQ). CD-Action credits these lobbies with helping turn Heroes 3 into an esports game (CD-Action, Sep 3, 2026). Without the lobby, HotA can still be played over a local network after turning on Windows' DirectPlay feature (HotA FAQ). More on Multiplayer.

Tournament rules

HotA games set up for online play can tick a "Tournament rules" box, an HD mod option that applies common online conventions: for example, Dimension Door can be cast once per turn (twice on the largest maps with Expert Air Magic), and players on Impossible difficulty get extra gold and resources (HotA FAQ). The crew calls it temporary and strongly discourages it in single-player games. The full written rules for rated games and tournaments, including which random map templates are played and how restarts work, are on HotA's online gaming rules page; they forbid cheat codes and trainers. How players compete is on Competitive Scene.

Horn of the Abyss and the Remake

Ubisoft's Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake does not include HotA and has not been announced to include any of its towns. Ubisoft's brand director for Heroes of Might and Magic, Eric Damian-Vernet, told GRYOnline.pl that Ubisoft has contacted the HotA creators, has a good relationship with them and talks to them regularly, but would not confirm a HotA-like expansion; the Remake launches with the original game's balance, with openness to options such as HotA's (GRYOnline.pl, Sep 9, 2026). CD-Action reported the same contact and that the Remake will support mods through mod.io, on consoles too (CD-Action, Sep 1, 2026). The HotA Crew has made no public statement about the Remake, as of Oct 21, 2026. Ubisoft also says the Remake "is not intended to replace the original game" (Steam, Aug 27, 2026), so HotA, which runs on the original, is not affected by it. What the Remake does promise for player-made content is in its gameplay overview trailer: it is "fully retro compatible" with the maps and campaigns players made for the original game and comes with editor tools for maps, custom balancing and sound; the trailer does not mention HotA or its towns.
