Complete Edition
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete is the 1999 game with both expansions, Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death, in one package, first released in 2000 and sold today on GOG and, since Aug 25, 2026, on Steam for $9.99. It is the version the fan-made Horn of the Abyss and HD mod install over.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete is the original 1999 game together with both of its expansions, Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death, in one package: all nine towns, every campaign, the random map generator and the map and campaign editors. It first came out in 2000, has long been sold on GOG, and reached Steam on Aug 25, 2026 (app 4921760) for $9.99, the same day Ubisoft revealed the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake. It is the version people mean when they talk about playing Heroes 3 today, because the fan-made, unofficial Horn of the Abyss and HD Mod install over it (How to Play Heroes 3 Today).

What is in the Complete edition
The Complete edition holds everything New World Computing made for Heroes 3 in the main line. Steam's page puts it plainly: "This is the original version of the game from 1999. The pack includes the original Heroes of Might and Magic III and its two expansions: Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death." The YouTuber Norovo, explaining in 2023 why he prefers it to the HD Edition, credits Armageddon's Blade's random map generator with much of the game's replayability, and adds that the extra scenarios and campaigns of the expansion alone "more or less doubles" the playable maps.
| Adds | |
|---|---|
| The Restoration of Erathia (Feb 28, 1999) | Eight towns, seven campaigns of Queen Catherine's war, the standard maps and a map editor |
| Armageddon's Blade (Sep 29, 1999) | The Conflux town, six campaigns, 38 new maps (per its manual), the random map generator, a campaign editor |
| The Shadow of Death (Mar 21, 2000) | Seven campaigns about the necromancer Sandro, 38 new maps, Combination Artifacts, special terrains, moat damage, updated creature stats |
The Heroes Chronicles episodes are not part of it: they were sold separately (see Heroes Chronicles). Because it contains The Shadow of Death, its creature numbers are The Shadow of Death's updated ones, for example the Lizard Warrior and the Angels (The Shadow of Death manual, pp.24-25).
GOG's copy also lists "Multi LAN and Hotseat only" for multiplayer, and adds the manuals (209 pages), the soundtrack, creature tables and a getting-started guide. Both the Steam and GOG installs include the map editor (h3maped.exe) and the campaign editor (h3ccmped.exe), which Ubisoft's FAQ says are found in the game's install folder.
The 2000 release
3DO first sold the game and both expansions together as Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete in 2000. The date differs between sources: Wikipedia's Heroes 3 article gives Oct 2, 2000 for Windows in North America and Dec 19, 2000 for the Mac, while its Heroes Chronicles article says Nov 17, 2000. Wikipedia's Chronicles article also notes that the Complete box offered much more content for the price of two Chronicles chapters.
GOG
GOG sells it as "Heroes of Might and Magic® 3: Complete", DRM-free and part of its Preservation Program, which means GOG keeps it working on current systems. The page lists Windows 10 and 11. The earliest archived copy of the GOG page is from Aug 24, 2009, so it was on sale there by then; no dated source gives the exact day it arrived. In GOG's archived page of Oct 12, 2026, it was on sale at $4.99, 50% off a $9.99 list price, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 15,934 ratings.
Steam: the Aug 25, 2026 launch
The original game reached Steam on Aug 25, 2026, the day Ubisoft revealed the Remake at Gamescom Opening Night Live with a cinematic trailer that opens on "The great king of Erathia is dead", the assassination that starts the 1999 game's story. The Complete Edition went on sale priced $9.99 and £8.99. It went wrong at once. The download was a 23.49 KB placeholder Heroes3.exe that showed only "Dummy executable. Ensure that you are on the right Steam branch.", as VideoCardz and PC Gamer reported on Aug 26. Reviews turned "Mostly Negative" within hours; PC Gamer counted the rating at 80% negative when it wrote.
Ubisoft fixed it within about a day. God is a Geek says the fix came "roughly 10 hours after launch with a 770MB update", and the franchise's account posted: "We investigated the issue and can confirm it has now been resolved." On Aug 27, 2026 Ubisoft apologized on Steam: "we mistakenly released the wrong package yesterday. We're very sorry for the mistake. The issue has now been resolved." In the Remake's first dev blog the same day it promised that this version, with both expansions, will keep being supported.
Ubisoft's FAQ: mods, GOG, Windows, Linux and Steam Deck
Ubisoft answered the common questions in a Steam post on Sep 18, 2026:
- What it is: the Complete Edition, the base game plus both expansions, and it "supports community-favorite mods such as the HD Mod and Horn of the Abyss (HotA)". The old HD Edition, by contrast, has only The Restoration of Erathia and does not support the expansions or community mods.
- Same as GOG? "Yes, both versions contain the same core game content and expansion files."
- Crashes, black screens or lag on modern Windows: Ubisoft points to DDrawCompat, a community DirectDraw wrapper: put its ddraw.dll in the game folder. Installing the HD mod or Horn of the Abyss also fixes display and resolution.
- Linux and Proton: installing the HD mod "resolves Linux launch and rendering issues"; the Heroic Games Launcher's guide is the alternative.
- Steam Deck: "not officially compatible", with a community setup guide linked.
- Editors: browse the local files for h3maped.exe and h3ccmped.exe.
Steam reviews, then and now
At launch, with the placeholder file, the reviews were "Mostly Negative" (VideoCardz and God is a Geek, Aug 26, 2026). Two months later the store shows "Mixed", 48% positive of 243 reviews, and 47% of 70 in the last 30 days (Oct 21, 2026). Steam counted 114 players in it at 17:47 UTC on Oct 21, 2026, while Horn of the Abyss, which Steam lists as its own free app 5061200, had 260 at the same minute. Players who launch from GOG or disc copies are not counted, so neither number measures the game's audience.
Steam or GOG?
Ubisoft says the game files are the same, and both cost $9.99 at list price, so the choice comes down to the store. GOG's copy is DRM-free, has the manuals and soundtrack as extras, and is often on sale. Steam's keeps the game in a Steam library, and Horn of the Abyss can be added from Steam's own free listing. Both run Horn of the Abyss and the HD mod.
Frequently asked questions
What is in Heroes 3 Complete? Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete contains the 1999 base game, The Restoration of Erathia, and both expansions, Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death: nine towns, the campaigns of all three, the random map generator and the map and campaign editors. It does not include the Heroes Chronicles episodes.
Should I buy Heroes 3 Complete on Steam or GOG? Ubisoft says the Steam and GOG versions of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete have the same game and expansion files, and both list at $9.99 (Oct 21, 2026). GOG's copy is DRM-free with the manuals and soundtrack, and Steam's sits in a Steam library; both run Horn of the Abyss.
Does Heroes 3 Complete work on Windows 11? Yes: GOG lists Windows 10 and 11 for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete, and Ubisoft's Steam FAQ suggests the DDrawCompat wrapper, the fan-made HD mod or Horn of the Abyss if the screen goes black, freezes or lags on modern Windows.
Is Heroes 3 Complete the same as the HD Edition? No: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete is the original game with both expansions and supports Horn of the Abyss and the HD mod, while the 2015 HD Edition has only the base game in redrawn widescreen graphics and supports neither.
Why did the Heroes 3 Steam release not work? When Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete launched on Steam on Aug 25, 2026, the download held only a 23.49 KB placeholder file; Ubisoft fixed it within about a day and apologized on Steam on Aug 27, 2026.
Is Heroes 3 Shadow of Death on Steam? Yes: The Shadow of Death is part of the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete Edition, sold on Steam since Aug 25, 2026 under the store title "Heroes Of Might And Magic III" with Armageddon's Blade and the base game.

How to Play Heroes 3 TodayThe usual way to play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 today is the Complete edition from GOG or Steam with the fan-made HD mod for widescreen and fixes, and usually the fan-made Horn of the Abyss on top; the HD Edition runs on its own but takes no mods. Mac, Linux, Steam Deck and Android need workarounds or the fan-made VCMI engine.
