Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Ubisoft's "2027" window.
Best guessUbisoft has said only "2027" for the Remake (on every store page and in its Aug 25, 2026 reveal), with a Closed Playtest in November 2026 and four monthly feature cycles on its Oct 7, 2026 roadmap still to run; with no month, quarter or price announced, we count to the end of the announced year. How to Play Heroes 3 Today

The usual way to play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 today is the Complete edition from GOG or Steam with the fan-made HD mod for widescreen and fixes, and usually the fan-made Horn of the Abyss on top; the HD Edition runs on its own but takes no mods. Mac, Linux, Steam Deck and Android need workarounds or the fan-made VCMI engine.

The usual way to play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 today is to buy the Complete Edition on GOG or Steam ($9.99), then add two free, fan-made and unofficial projects: the HD Mod for widescreen resolutions, fixes and the online lobby, and usually Horn of the Abyss, which brings the HD mod with it and adds three towns and many fixes. Ubisoft's 2015 HD Edition runs on modern Windows on its own, in widescreen, but has no expansions and takes no mods. On Mac, Linux, Steam Deck and Android there is no official version: players use Windows compatibility layers or the fan-made VCMI engine with the game's original files.

Step 1: buy the Complete edition

Buy Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete, the 1999 game with Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death, from GOG or, since Aug 25, 2026, Steam. Ubisoft says both "contain the same core game content and expansion files", and both list at $9.99 (Oct 21, 2026). GOG's copy is DRM-free and lists Windows 10 and 11.

Do not buy the HD Edition if you want mods: Ubisoft's own FAQ says it "does not support the official expansions or community mods", and Horn of the Abyss refuses to install over it. Old discs of The Shadow of Death or the Complete edition also work as a base; The Restoration of Erathia or Armageddon's Blade alone do not.

Step 2: install Horn of the Abyss

Horn of the Abyss (HotA) is a free, fan-made and unofficial add-on by the volunteer HotA Crew, not made by Ubisoft. Its latest version is 1.8.1, released Aug 25, 2026. It adds the Cove, Factory and Bulwark towns (see Horn of the Abyss Towns), new creatures, artifacts, campaigns and map objects, fixes, and "the essential HD Mod by Baratorch integrated", as its Steam page puts it. Norovo describes it as content added "in a really professional and tasteful way that almost feels like an official expansion", and says most long-time players treat it as part of the game.

  • From Steam: HotA has its own free listing, app 5061200, released Aug 25, 2026, which needs Heroes 3 in the same library.
  • From GOG: GOG lists HotA as a free mod.
  • From the official site: download the installer from h3hota.com and point it at the folder that holds Heroes 3. HotA is not stand-alone.

Install it, its download page says, "on top of the previous HotA version or the original game" Shadow of Death or Complete; "Localization of the original game does not matter." Never over the HD Edition, The Restoration of Erathia or Armageddon's Blade, and its FAQ adds that it will not install over In the Wake of Gods.

Step 3: the HD mod (if you skip HotA)

The HD mod (in two forms, HD and HD+) is a "non-official fan made addon (multifunction patch)" by Alexander Barinov, known as baratorch. It began as a way past the original 800 by 600 resolution; it improves the interface, fixes some original bugs, leaves the game files untouched and aims not to change the gameplay. It works fully with The Shadow of Death, the Complete edition and Horn of the Abyss, partly with In the Wake of Gods, and not with The Restoration of Erathia, Armageddon's Blade or Heroes Chronicles alone. Horn of the Abyss already includes it, so install it separately only to play the unmodded Complete edition in widescreen. HD+ adds "original gameplay fixes and other essential features for online multiplayer gaming". Norovo lists what he values in it beyond resolution: quick combat, a battle queue, new hotkeys that make managing armies far faster, and bug fixes.

Widescreen and resolution

The 1999 game draws an 800 by 600 screen. For widescreen there are two routes: the fan-made HD mod (inside Horn of the Abyss, or alone over the Complete edition), which brings high resolutions and extended graphics settings, or the official HD Edition, which was redrawn "with wide screen compatibility" but only for the base game. On the Complete edition, Ubisoft's FAQ notes, installing the HD mod or HotA "also optimises display rendering and resolution choices automatically."

Windows 10 and Windows 11

Heroes 3 runs on Windows 10 and 11: GOG lists both for the Complete edition, and the HD Edition's Steam page says it "can be played on Windows 10 and Windows 11 OS." If the Complete edition lags, crashes, freezes or shows a black screen, Ubisoft's Steam FAQ of Sep 18, 2026 gives the fix: download DDrawCompat (narzoul's DirectDraw compatibility wrapper on GitHub), put its ddraw.dll beside the game's .exe and relaunch. Installing the HD mod or Horn of the Abyss solves the same problems.

Playing online

The original game played hotseat on one computer or over a local network, and GOG still lists "Multi LAN and Hotseat only" for the Complete edition. Online play today runs through the lobby built into the fan-made HD mod: it arrived in version 5.0 beta 1 on Aug 19, 2017, gained friends lists and blacklists that November, and has kept a history of ranked games since Oct 25, 2023, according to the HD mod's changelog. Installing Horn of the Abyss, or the HD mod alone, is all it takes to reach it. The HotA Crew's FAQ notes that the lobby server is run by the HD mod's developer, not by the HotA team. The HD Edition has a separate Steam lobby of its own; Norovo notes that the HD mod's lobby, unlike the HD Edition's, "actually has players in it", and lets players take turns at the same time until they meet. More on Multiplayer.

Mac and Linux

There is no Mac or Linux version on sale. The Complete edition on GOG and Steam is Windows only (a Mac version came out in 1999 and a Linux port by Loki Software the same year, according to Wikipedia, but neither is sold today). Horn of the Abyss's download page says it was built for Windows and that "For other systems the emulator-based solutions can be used", with its own guides for macOS and Linux. On Linux and Proton, Ubisoft's FAQ says installing the HD mod "resolves Linux launch and rendering issues", and points to the Heroic Games Launcher's guide as an alternative.

Steam Deck

Ubisoft says the Steam Complete edition is "not officially compatible with Steam Deck", but links a community setup guide in its Sep 18, 2026 FAQ. The Deck runs Windows games through Proton, so the Linux advice above applies.

Android and iPhone

The HD Edition came out on iOS and Android tablets on Jan 29, 2015, but both listings were gone when checked on Oct 21, 2026. Horn of the Abyss's download page links a guide to running it on Android through an emulator. The other route is VCMI.

VCMI: the open-source engine

VCMI is a fan-made, unofficial, open-source engine for Heroes 3 (GPL-2.0) that runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS and Android, with interface improvements, mod support, a launcher and an online lobby. It contains no game content: you must own the original Heroes 3 data files, for example from the Complete edition, and copy them in. Its latest release is 1.7.5, from Aug 15, 2026. Its FAQ says Horn of the Abyss and In the Wake of Gods are not natively supported, though some of their features have been partly ported.

Or wait for the Remake

Ubisoft's Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake, due in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, is a 3D rebuild, not a patch for any of the above. Its gameplay overview trailer says it will be "fully retro compatible from release, with hundreds of player maps and campaigns created for the original game", with editor tools for maps and custom balancing. Ubisoft also says it "is not intended to replace the original game" and that it will keep supporting the Complete edition on Steam.

Frequently asked questions

Does Heroes 3 run on Windows 11? Yes: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete lists Windows 10 and 11 on GOG, and Ubisoft's Steam FAQ fixes black screens, freezes and lag with the DDrawCompat wrapper or by installing the fan-made HD mod or Horn of the Abyss.

How do I play Heroes 3 in widescreen? Install the fan-made HD mod, or Horn of the Abyss, which includes it, over Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete for high resolutions; the official HD Edition is also widescreen but has only the base game and takes no mods.

How do I install Horn of the Abyss? Get Horn of the Abyss free from h3hota.com, Steam (app 5061200) or GOG and install it over Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete or The Shadow of Death, never over the HD Edition; it is fan-made and unofficial.

Can I play Heroes 3 on a Mac? There is no Mac version of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 on sale today; Mac players use emulator setups described by the Horn of the Abyss team, or the fan-made VCMI engine with the game's original files.

Does Heroes 3 work on Steam Deck? Ubisoft says Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete is not officially compatible with Steam Deck (Sep 18, 2026), but it links a community setup guide, and the fan-made HD mod fixes most launch problems under Proton.

Can I play Heroes 3 on Android? There is no official Android version of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 on sale as of Oct 21, 2026; players use the fan-made VCMI engine with the original game files, or an emulator setup for Horn of the Abyss.

What is VCMI? VCMI is a free, fan-made, open-source engine for Heroes of Might and Magic 3 that runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS and Android and needs the original game's data files; its latest version is 1.7.5 (Aug 15, 2026).
