Multiplayer
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 supports up to eight players on one map, taking turns at one computer (hot seat) or over a network. Today most online games run through the fan-made HD mod's lobby with Horn of the Abyss, the HD Edition has its own Steamworks lobby, and Ubisoft's Remake promises online play for up to eight with simultaneous turns, plus Hot Seat.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a game for up to eight players, each a color on the map, who play either by passing one computer around (a "hotseat game") or on several computers connected by a network, with any color no human takes played by the computer (Prima guide, p.2). How you play with other people today depends on the version: most online Heroes 3 runs through the lobby of the fan-made, unofficial HD mod with the fan-made Horn of the Abyss, where ranked games and tournaments happen; Ubisoft's 2015 HD Edition has a Steamworks lobby of its own; and the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake, coming in 2027, promises online play for up to eight with simultaneous turns and the return of Hot Seat (Ubisoft, Aug 25, 2026). Tournaments and ranked play are on Competitive Scene.

Hot seat
Hot seat is the original way to play Heroes 3 with friends: every player sits at the same computer and takes a turn in order, and each day ends once all of them have moved (Prima guide, p.2). GameSpot's 1999 review called Heroes 3 "a much better multiplayer game than its predecessors", because players can scroll around the map and review their forces while someone else is moving (GameSpot, Mar 1, 1999).
Hot seat is part of why the game never went away in Poland: Android.com.pl's 25th-anniversary feature names playing together on one computer, alongside the strategy itself and modest graphics that ran on cheap and old PCs, among the reasons for its lasting popularity there (Android.com.pl, Feb 28, 2024). Every version still has it: the Complete edition, the HD Edition's local multiplayer mode (Steam), Horn of the Abyss with the HD mod, and the Remake, where Ubisoft calls it "the fan-favorite Hot Seat mode" (Ubisoft, Aug 25, 2026).
Network play in the 1999 game
The official strategy guide for The Restoration of Erathia says that standard scenarios hold two to eight combatants, and that human players can sit "at multiple computers connected via a network" (Prima guide, p.2). Which connection types the 1999 game offered, and whether any internet matchmaking service carried it, is not in the sources Vi.ki read, so this page does not list them. GOG's Complete edition today describes its multiplayer as "Multi LAN and Hotseat only" (GOG), and the Complete edition Ubisoft put on Steam on Aug 25, 2026 has the same game files (Steam, Sep 18, 2026).
Local network games still work on a modern PC: the HotA Crew's FAQ says LAN play over TCP/IP needs Windows' DirectPlay feature turned on in "Programs and Features", or the DirectPlay component installed through Winetricks on macOS and Linux (HotA FAQ).
Teams and alliances
Heroes 3 has no separate co-op mode in the sources read; players share a map, and a scenario can lock some colors into alliances. The official guide's card for the extra-large map Warmongers, for example, lists "Alliances: Green/Orange/Purple" among its six players (Prima guide, p.278). Random maps and their templates set up teams too; HotA's template list includes team versions such as mt_TeamJebus (HotA changelog). Map types are on Maps.
The HD Edition's lobby
Ubisoft and Dotemu's HD Edition (Jan 29, 2015, $14.99 on Steam as of Oct 21, 2026) offers "a local multiplayer mode" and "a new online multiplayer lobby", which its Steam page describes as Steamworks compatible (Steam). The HD Edition is The Restoration of Erathia only, without the expansions or the random map generator, and it cannot run Horn of the Abyss or the HD mod, so its players are a separate pool from the HotA lobby's.
The Horn of the Abyss lobby
Most online Heroes 3 today is the fan-made Horn of the Abyss played through the online lobby of the fan-made HD mod. Alexander Barinov's HD mod added the "HotA online-lobby for multiplayer gaming" in version 5.0 beta 1 on Aug 19, 2017, a friends list and blacklist on Nov 6, 2017, and a history of ranked games on Oct 25, 2023 (HD mod changelog). The lobby belongs to the HD mod's developer; the HotA Crew does not support the server (HotA FAQ). CD-Action credits these networked lobbies with helping Heroes 3 become an esports game (CD-Action, Sep 3, 2026).
To play there you need the Complete edition or The Shadow of Death with Horn of the Abyss and the HD mod installed; the HotA release on Steam and GOG is free and has the HD mod built in. Online games there can use:
- Ranked games, recorded in the lobby's history of ranked games (HD mod changelog).
- Tournament rules, an HD mod checkbox that applies common online conventions, such as Dimension Door once per turn (HotA FAQ).
- Simultaneous turns, in which players move at the same time; HotA's rules have fair-play rules for them, and both the HD mod and HotA have fixed bugs in them (HotA rules; HD mod changelog).
- Random map templates built for online play, such as h3dm1, mt_Jebus, Nostalgia, Firewalk and Jebus Cross, each with its own rules on HotA's online gaming rules page. Since HotA 1.6.0 (Jan 1, 2020), battles on standard online templates end after 100 rounds, when the attacker must flee, surrender or use quick combat (HotA changelog).
Online matches are not usually played on hand-made maps: as the player Lexiav explains for newcomers, they are played on random maps generated from a template, and Jebus Cross is one of the most popular. The written rules for rated games are based on older HeroesWorld rules adapted to HotA, and forbid cheat codes, trainers and opening a played random map in the editor before the game ends (HotA rules). Steam's player count for the HotA listing does not measure the lobby, because most HotA players start the game outside Steam.
Multiplayer in the Remake
Ubisoft's gameplay overview trailer for the Remake says multiplayer "returns with improved matchmaking and a simultaneous turn system". Ubisoft says the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake will let "up to eight players" play "in a revamped online mode", with "a simultaneous turn system, and the return of the fan-favorite Hot Seat mode" (Ubisoft, Aug 25, 2026). Its developers add that the random map generator and Hot Seat "will also return in full", and that the map editor will import maps made for the original game (Steam, Aug 27, 2026). Multiplayer is the fourth of the four monthly feature cycles in Ubisoft's community roadmap of Oct 7, 2026, "Hotseat, PvP, and beyond" (Steam). Ubisoft has not announced cross-play between PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S (GamesHub, Aug 26, 2026), nor whether the Remake can play online with the original game; it says the Remake "is not intended to replace the original game." What else changes is on What's New in the Remake.
