Story
Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is set on the continent of Antagarich, where Queen Catherine Ironfist returns to Erathia after the assassination of her father, King Gryphonheart, to drive out the invaders who sacked her homeland; Armageddon's Blade follows Lucifer Kreegan's quest for a world-burning sword, and The Shadow of Death tells how the necromancer Sandro set the war in motion.
The story of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 follows Queen Catherine Ironfist, who sails home to the kingdom of Erathia on the continent of Antagarich after her father, King Gryphonheart, is assassinated, and fights to drive out the invaders who have sacked her homeland. The game is "a turn-based game of strategic conquest set in Erathia, a land of myth and legend" (Prima guide, p.1), and Catherine's own words open the first campaign: "With the death of my father, Erathia's lands are being greedily divided by her neighbors" (p.288). Armageddon's Blade (1999) continues with the demon lord Lucifer Kreegan's search for a sword that can set the world on fire, and The Shadow of Death (2000) goes back in time to show how the necromancer Sandro started it all. The story is told through the Campaigns; this page tells it in order, with spoilers. The Remake's Reveal Trailer (Aug 25, 2026) opens on the same moment: "The great king of Erathia is dead. And the enemies of the kingdom are scrambling to feed on its remains."

The world
Antagarich is a continent of rival nations. The expansion manuals name them: Erathia, the human kingdom at the center of the story; Eeofol, the land of the demonic Kreegans; Deyja, ruled by necromancers; AvLee, the elves' forest kingdom; Bracada, land of the wizards; Krewlod, the barbarians' kingdom under Duke Winston Boragus; Tatalia, the swamp kingdom; and Nighon, home of the Dungeon Overlords (Armageddon's Blade manual, pp.9-11; The Shadow of Death manual, pp.4-16). Enroth, the continent of Heroes 2, lies across the sea: Crag Hack arrives "from Enroth" seeking fortune "on this new continent, Antagarich" (The Shadow of Death manual, p.13).
The Restoration of Erathia
The original campaigns tell the war "from three points of view, following the actions of good, evil, and neutral characters": Catherine's three campaigns, two from her enemies, one about mercenaries profiting from the turmoil, and a secret campaign set after the war (Prima guide, p.287).
King Roland Ironfist of Enroth has disappeared (in the run-up to Might and Magic VI), leaving his wife, Queen Catherine, to rule. Then her father, King Nicolas Gryphonheart of Erathia, is assassinated, and without him Erathia falls to the Dungeon Overlords of Nighon and the Kreegans of Eeofol, who sack the capital, Steadwick. Tatalia and Krewlod skirmish on the western border to grab land. Catherine returns to Antagarich to rally her people, and with the wizards of Bracada and the elves of AvLee she retakes Steadwick and ends the border war (Wikipedia). The evil campaign Dungeons and Devils plays the other side: "Erathian history has never recorded the fall of Steadwick to her enemies" (Prima guide, p.297).
Lucifer Kreegan, a commander of Eeofol, then claims that Roland is his prisoner. AvLee invades Eeofol but fails to free him, and Catherine drives the Dungeon armies back to their island through the tunnels of Nighon (Wikipedia).
Meanwhile the necromancers of Deyja, who arranged Gryphonheart's assassination, raise his body as a lich to lead their undead. The plan backfires: the Lich King Gryphonheart takes control of Deyja himself. In the last good campaign, Song for the Father, Erathia marches against the undead "with the resurrected body of King Gryphonheart leading them" (Prima guide, p.331), and Catherine has to ally with some of the necromancers to destroy him (Wikipedia).
The secret campaign, Seeds of Discontent, follows Faruk Welnin, who wants to free the Contested Lands "from both Erathia and AvLee forever" (Prima guide, p.339). Wikipedia notes that the rising is later implied to have been orchestrated by Archibald Ironfist, the villain of Heroes 2.
Armageddon's Blade
Armageddon's Blade picks up after the war. "After the mysterious slaying of demon King Xenofex, Lucifer Kreegan solidified his rule over the clans in Eeofol", and after a dream he gathers relics to forge "the legendary Armageddon's Blade, which has the power to set the world on fire" (Armageddon's Blade manual, p.9). The manual opens with his letter: Xenofex appeared to him in a dream, and he must find the Breastplate of Brimstone, the Sword of Hellfire and the Shield of the Damned, which an old man forges into the Blade (pp.2-3).
Catherine orders her troops into Eeofol to dethrone him, though "Erathia's people are split over Catherine's action", and Elemental Confluxes "the size of cities" appear near the border (p.9): the Conflux town. Catherine, Roland (freed in Might and Magic VII) and the half-elf Gelu lead the war. Kreegan's general Xeron obtains the Blade, but Gelu defeats him, claims it and, at Catherine's request, kills Lucifer Kreegan with it; the Ironfists return to Enroth and the Blade stays with Gelu (Wikipedia).
The expansion's other five campaigns are side stories: Mutare's quest for Dragon's Blood, Dracon's dragon hunt, Kilgor's fight for the throne of Krewlod, the fire witch Adrienne's hunt for a Death Knight, and young Sir Christian shipwrecked "in a story pre-dating the Restoration wars" (Armageddon's Blade manual, pp.9-11).
The Shadow of Death
The Shadow of Death is a prequel: "The story reveals the events that lead to The Restoration of Erathia game" (The Shadow of Death manual, p.9). It is framed as a letter from Yog, son of a genie mother and a barbarian father, to the Wizards of Bracada. Before the Restoration war, Yog worked with "the young Gelu, the beautiful Gem, and the barbaric Crag Hack" to stop the necromancer Sandro, who used them to reach Deyja with powerful items and there "vaulted a puppet king, Finneas Vilmar, to the throne and threatened to conquer all of Antagarich" (pp.4-5).
Posing as a wizard's apprentice, Sandro hires Crag Hack and Gem to win the pieces of two necromantic artifacts, the Cloak of the Undead King and the Armor of the Damned. With both assembled, he fights off his old master, Ethric, who betrays him, and takes Deyja (manual, pp.13-15). The four heroes learn the truth, reassemble the sword Angelic Alliance that Yog had once scattered, and defeat Sandro in Deyja (Wikipedia).
The final campaign, Specter of Power, shows Sandro's second plan, against Erathia, "with a little help from the corrupted Lord Haart, the brutish Kreegans and the greedy Dungeon Overlords" (manual, p.16). Sandro, with Lord Haart's help, has King Gryphonheart poisoned, then is tricked and imprisoned by his own puppet king, Finneas Vilmar, who leads the invasion of Erathia that opens The Restoration of Erathia (Wikipedia). So the answer to who killed Gryphonheart is Sandro's plot, carried out with Lord Haart, for the necromancers of Deyja.

Heroes Chronicles and what comes next
Heroes Chronicles, eight episodes released from Sep 2000 to Jun 2001, tells the story of Tarnum, "a barbarian judged unworthy of Paradise due to his crimes", made immortal by the Ancestors; its last chapter, The Sword of Frost, carries Armageddon's Blade's story on toward the cataclysm that opens Heroes 4 (Wikipedia). Kilgor and Sir Christian also return in Heroes 4 (Wikipedia).
The story in the Remake
The Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake, due in 2027, keeps "the entire continent of the original game as well as its two expansions" and adds "a new introductory prologue campaign designed to ease players into the world and gameplay" and "a number of new fully produced cinematics", with voice acting; its gameplay overview promises to "witness the rise of Queen Catherine Ironfist, confront the dark ambitions of Sandro the Necromancer, and face the apocalyptic threat of Armageddon's Blade" (Ubisoft, Aug 25, 2026). Ubisoft's press release says "the entire story is now woven into a single continuous experience" (Aug 26, 2026), and the store page promises "the original campaigns as one unified story, enhanced with a new prologue, epilogue, and cinematic scenes" (Steam, read Oct 21, 2026). Ubisoft has not said what the prologue and epilogue show, as of Oct 21, 2026. See What's New in the Remake.
