Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake: Dec 2027Not announced: our best guess from Ubisoft's "2027" window.
Best guessUbisoft has said only "2027" for the Remake (on every store page and in its Aug 25, 2026 reveal), with a Closed Playtest in November 2026 and four monthly feature cycles on its Oct 7, 2026 roadmap still to run; with no month, quarter or price announced, we count to the end of the announced year. Reception and Legacy

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was praised on release (GameSpot gave it 9.1, "Superb", on Mar 1, 1999) and is still called the series' high point; PC Gamer wrote in 2026 that "it's still the gold standard". It kept a large following in Poland, Russia and Eastern Europe, where hot seat play and early translations helped, and still draws about 1,700 players at a time on Steam's HD Edition alone (Oct 21, 2026).

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was a critical and commercial hit in 1999, rated 9.1, "Superb", by GameSpot on Mar 1, 1999, and more than 25 years later it is still the series' reference point: PC Gamer says it "has long been considered the pinnacle" of Heroes of Might and Magic and that "nearly 30 years later, it's still the gold standard" (PC Gamer, Apr 30, 2026). It has an especially lasting following in Poland, Russia and Eastern Europe, which Wikipedia puts down to early Russian and Polish translations and hot seat play at a time when few homes there had internet. Fans still make maps, mods and tournaments for it, most visibly the fan-made Horn of the Abyss, and Ubisoft's 2026 Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake was greeted with interest and, for its art, a good deal of criticism. How it was made is on Development History.

Reviews in 1999

GameSpot's Greg Kasavin gave it 9.1 and wrote that "spending even a short time with the game quells any doubt that it's anything but an excellent sequel and a first-rate strategy game in its own right." He called the Heroes formula "one of the most brilliant strategy game designs ever conceived", liked the seven creature slots per hero, the upgrades and special abilities, the "incredible and well-suited orchestral themes for each castle", and the better multiplayer, in which you can scroll the map and review your forces while others take their turns. Ubisoft still opened its 2015 HD Edition launch trailer with such quotes from the 1999 press, GameSpot's "an excellent sequel" among them. His doubts were about the new look: the 3D-rendered creatures "seem to lack some of the charm and character of the previous games" at first, though he found the series' humor intact.

Computer Gaming World's Robert Coffey called it "mind-boggling in its depth" while criticizing uneven campaign pacing and slow online connections, and Next Generation said it "reminds us that turn-based play is alive and well" at a time when real-time strategy dominated (both quoted by Wikipedia). Wikipedia notes that GameRankings showed favorable reviews; no Metacritic score exists for the 1999 original (Metacritic, read Oct 21, 2026).

Awards

According to Wikipedia, Heroes 3 was a finalist for Computer Games Strategy Plus's Strategy Game of the Year for 1999, which went to RollerCoaster Tycoon, and for Computer Strategy Game of the Year at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Interactive Achievement Awards, won by Age of Empires II. It was runner-up for Best Music in GameSpot's awards for 1999. Armageddon's Blade won Computer Games Strategy Plus's Add-on of the Year for 1999 (Wikipedia).

Sales

PC Data, which tracked sales in the United States, had Heroes 3 at No. 3 on its weekly chart for Feb 28 to Mar 6, 1999, where it stayed for two more weeks; it was the second best-selling computer game in the US for March 1999, and PC Data counted 185,553 US units by September 2000 (Wikipedia). The often quoted "1.5 million" is the whole series: in December 1999 3DO said "the series has sold 1.5 million units worldwide" (3DO, Dec 21, 1999). No reputable worldwide figure for Heroes 3 alone has been published, as of Oct 21, 2026.

The HD Edition's reception

Ubisoft's 2015 HD Edition, by Dotemu, was poorly received for what it left out: it is only the 1999 base game, without the expansions or the random map generator. PC Gamer scored it 71 and summed it up as "a great game, unimpressively updated. Get the bigger, cheaper version instead" (PC Gamer, Feb 4, 2015). It holds a Metascore of 65 from 30 reviews and a user score of 5.6, yet Steam players rate it "Mostly Positive", 79% of 25,119 reviews (Oct 21, 2026). Ubisoft itself said in 2026 that the HD Edition showed "improved graphics alone are not enough" (Ubisoft dev blog, Aug 27, 2026).

When the original Complete Edition finally reached Steam on Aug 25, 2026 for $9.99, the download was a 23.49 KB placeholder, and its rating sank to 80% negative within a day (PC Gamer, Aug 26, 2026). Ubisoft apologized and fixed it (Ubisoft on Steam, Aug 27, 2026); by Oct 21, 2026 the rating had climbed to "Mixed", 48% of 243.

How many people play it

Steam shows only part of the audience, because many players run the GOG or disc version, usually with the fan-made HD mod or Horn of the Abyss. Valve's own count at 17:47 UTC on Oct 21, 2026 was 1,720 players in the HD Edition, 114 in the Steam Complete Edition and 260 in Horn of the Abyss's free Steam listing. SteamCharts records the HD Edition's all-time peak as 4,598 in March 2020, and an average of 1,287 players in September 2026 with a peak of 2,227 that month. For comparison, the new Heroes game Olden Era had 4,862 players at the same moment.

Why it lasts

Ubisoft's own gameplay overview of the Remake opens by saying Heroes 3 "earned its place as one of the greatest strategy games of all time". Explanations from the press:

  • It is simply very good. Polish site Android.com.pl, marking the game's 25th anniversary on Feb 28, 2024, gave three reasons for its hold on Poland: an excellent strategy game, simple graphics that ran on cheap or old PCs, and hot seat play on one computer (Android.com.pl, Feb 28, 2024). PC Gamer: "HoMM 3 was exceptional in 1999, and age has not tarnished it" (PC Gamer, Aug 26, 2026).
  • Early translations and hot seat. Wikipedia notes it was translated into Russian and Polish in 1999, unusual for a Western game then, was widely distributed in a region where piracy was common, and could be played by several people on one computer when only 2% of Russian and 7% of Polish households had internet access.
  • The community kept building. Mods from Russian developers made it a competitive online game from 2009, Android.com.pl writes, and Horn of the Abyss, a fan-made, unofficial expansion first released on Dec 31, 2011, has added three towns, the latest (Bulwark) on Dec 31, 2025. Ubisoft itself says "players continue to create maps, develop mods, analyze strategies, and organize tournaments" (Ubisoft dev blog, Aug 27, 2026).

Fans give similar reasons. Quick Save, ranking the game's nine factions in 2018, calls the third game its favorite in the series for its art style, its factions and the random maps that give it endless replayability; that is one channel's opinion.

Tournaments

The game "was probably never intended to be played as an esport", the Heroes 3 creator Norovo remarks, yet it has a busy tournament scene. Poland's championship returned in 2026 for its fourth edition, the first since 2020, with a record 518 registered players, run by h3.gg with Ubisoft and Jaskinia Behemota as strategic partners (CD-Action, Jun 1, 2026). Polish player Marek "Szopa666" Szczepański won the World Championship reported in January 2022 against more than 1,000 entrants, taking 1,000 euros (Instalki.pl, Jan 18, 2022). More on Competitive Scene.

The Remake's reception

Ubisoft announced the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake on Aug 25, 2026, and the art drew most of the comment. Reactions under the reveal trailer "leaned critical", some joking it looked AI-generated (GameDaily, Aug 25, 2026); 80 Level collected comments calling it "plastic" and like a free-to-play mobile game (80 Level, Aug 26, 2026). PC Gamer, after playing the prologue and the Arrogance map, praised the detailed units and "cracking" combat animations but wrote "I fear the soul might be lacking", since the original's creatures had more character (PC Gamer, Aug 26, 2026).

Ubisoft answered on Oct 7, 2026 that much of the feedback concerned the visuals and some unit designs, that it had "already begun refining several creature models", and that it was exploring a "Playstyles" option to change object scale, color, lighting and interface for a classic or modern feel (Ubisoft on Steam, Oct 7, 2026). Asked about Horn of the Abyss, Ubisoft's brand director Eric Damian-Vernet told GRYOnline.pl only that Ubisoft talks regularly with its creators, without confirming any support (GRYOnline.pl, Sep 9, 2026). The Remake has no reviews yet; it is due in 2027 with no date, as of Oct 21, 2026.
